A Future Full of Hope: Vision, Priorities, and Goals for the Archdiocese of Seattle, 2004–2009

A Future Full of Hope culminates a broad consultation with the priests and people of the
Seattle Archdiocese by Archbishop Alex J. Brunett and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council
(APC). Intense listening sessions were conducted over a two-year period (2001-03) prior to
Archbishop Brunett’s approval and promulgation of the document in November 2004.

A Commitment to Protect, Heal and Care

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops approved the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in June, 2002 while meeting in Dallas, Texas to address allegations of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy.  The Dallas Charter contains guidelines for reconciliation, healing, accountability and prevention. The Seattle Archdiocese already had a program and procedures in place since the 1980s that provided a model for reporting allegations of sexual abuse and reaching out to victims. We welcome the Dallas Charter, and this report will update you on our efforts to protect children, heal victims and reach out pastorally to all in our care.

Good News Abounds in Archdiocese

Our archdiocesan vision statement proclaims that we look forward to A Future Full of Hope. Despite many challenges, God never ceases providing us with every grace and blessing necessary to bring the Gospel message of hope to a waiting world. As your Archbishop, I want to share with you some of the Good News about the many ways our local church is providing a hopeful sign of God’s presence in Western Washington.
