Archdiocesan Women's Commission
Mission:
To serve as the Archbishop's liaison to Catholic women, and to empower women through actions that educate, support, and call forth their God-given gifts and talents.
- To act as a voice, through careful and honest listening, to bring Catholic women's concerns to the Archbishop.
- To advise the Archbishop on issues which he may bring to the Commission.
- To educate parishes and faith communities within the Archdiocese about Church documents which relate to women.
Currently, the commission is developing a presentation on domestic violence for pastors. Archbishop Alex J. Brunett asked the commission to assist the diocese in educating priests and lay ministers about this issue which affects mostly women but also children and men. A statement of the U.S. Catholic bishops entitled “When I Call for Help” emphasizes that no person is expected to stay in an abusive marriage. Domestic violence is often hidden in silence and women are afraid to leave the relationship. This is where the church can publicly speak out against violence in every form -- physical, sexual, psychological, or verbal, and support women as they begin to take the necessary steps to end the abuse.
A second project for the commission is the “Women’s Voices -- Women’s Stories”, a long term oral history documentation of women’s contributions to the local church. Interviews of 28 women have been conducted thus far encompassing a wide range of cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds. The AWC is working with the Archdiocesan Archives Office to begin the process of assembling these stories into written form in the hopes of creating a book to commemorate the contributions of women, lay and religious, in living out their Catholic identity in our local church. The commission hopes to interview and record the lives of 100 Catholic women in the Seattle archdiocese and thereby add to the complexity and richness of the historical record.
Anyone interested in receiving more information on the commission, please contact Dr. Mary Cross, 206-382-4835. The commission is open to men as well.
