SPECIAL CALENDAR NOTE: Christmas 2010

This year, The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) falls on a Saturday. For parishes that normally anticipate the Sunday celebration on Saturday evenings, this may present a scheduling question.

The Christmas Vigil Mass is celebrated on Friday, December 24 followed by the usual Christmas Mass at Midnight.  On Saturday, December 25 Mass at Dawn and Mass during the Day are celebrated as appropriate.  It should be noted (assuming Christmas Mass has been celebrated earlier in the day) that there is no requirement for parishes to celebrate a Mass on the evening of Saturday, December 25 either for Christmas or as an anticipation of the next day's Sunday celebration (Feast of the Holy Family). On that evening, for pastoral reasons, some pastors choose not to celebrate Christmas Mass or the anticipation of the Sunday celebration.  In situations in which pastors determine a pastoral need to celebrate Mass on the evening of December 25, either Christmas Mass or the anticipation of the Sunday celebration (Holy Family) may be celebrated.  If a published schedule includes an evening celebration on December 25, pastors are advised to also publish the Mass that is to be celebrated.

The readings from any of the Christmas Masses may be used according to the pastoral needs of each Christmas celebration.
